Origin Story
Why this book — and why now.
I am a construction worker. I do not have an MFA. I never planned to write a 500-page novel about the end of the world. I wrote other books first under other names — history, biography, religious works — and they all danced around this one. They all wanted to be this.
These articles are the personal side of the project. Why I felt called to write it. The day it stopped being a project and started being a commission. The conversations with my wife and son about what their husband and father had become. The hardest parts to write — the chapters where children die, where the faithful are martyred, where the world ends not with a bang but with a slow, choreographed surrender.
If you want to know the man behind the message before you decide whether to trust the message, read these first.
